A little bit about me.

I was born in January 1959 and grew up in the Midlands.  My dad had competed for Great Britain at the inaugural Cyclo Cross World Champs in San Sebastian Spain, the early 1950s.  I feel I probably inherited the passion for competitive sport, in particular cycle racing and from an early age remember either marshalling or watching at either cyclo cross, time trials or park circuit racing. When I got my first bike at the age of 14, we joined the local Atherstone Cycling Club and rode on their Sunday club runs and evening club 10s.

I loved the freedom that the bike can gave me, the fresh air and the access to nature and the surrounding countryside, a passion I have always held. Never pushed, I was self motivated and planned my own midweek training.  I have enjoyed national success at Time trials, from 10 miles to 12 hours.  I have competed in road races up to international level.  Both disciplines enjoyable in their own rights, but usually the best rider wins in a time trial, that is not always true in road racing.

In 1982 I was fortunate to be invited to ride for a French club and learned some new bike handling skills and training ideas but also learned that I loved cycling as a sport and the next level took that aspect away. With a Family started and less free time I found that running was a time efficient way to keep fit healthy and still let me be competitive. I was very fortunate to have at close hand the very knowledgeable Bruce Tulloh, National and Internationally renowned athletics and marathon coach, picking up some very invaluable tips.

Eventually combining the two sports allowed me to compete at  World level in age group Duathlon and still win a National road race age group title.  I was introduced to Cycle Coaching ideas by “Julius Jennings”. Having been coached by “JJ” for several years and with his skills and broad scientific knowledge I was able to compete at a much higher level in time trials.  Performing personal bests at most distances and still winning the odd road race now and again.

I am very fortunate and grateful to have worked with JJ Koolstof Coaching who has helped many riders with his immense technical and practical knowledge in all aspects of cycling.

This varied career at regional, national and international level has given me a great deal of knowledge and expertise  which I am able to pass on to those who choose our coaching services, helping them to achieve their personal goals.
